At Vero Dental, we offer both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation for our patients who feel varying degrees of dental anxiety. Mild Sedation

Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas” is administered through a nosepiece and results in a calm, relaxed feeling. It also strengthens the efficacy of the local numbing anesthetic which enhances patient comfort. It’s a great option for patients who feel mild anxiety and need a little distraction.

Moderate Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is an option for patients who need something a little stronger than nitrous oxide. This is a pill taken about an hour before your dental appointment. You will not fall asleep during your procedure, but you will feel drowsy and relaxed. Even though you are “sedated,” you will remain conscious and able to respond to questions and instructions.

How long does dental sedation last?

Nitrous oxide only lasts as long as it is being administered. You can even drive yourself home after your appointment! The strength of your oral conscious sedation will be determined based on the length of your procedure to ensure that it will last as long as necessary. Because the effects of oral conscious sedation also takes longer to wear off, it is important to have someone drive you to and from your dental appointment.
